4Horizontal BookcaseJan 14, 2008
I bought this item for my youngest daughter's room, she's 5. It is very cute and assembled easily. I purchased the bookcase for her expanding book and stuffed animal collection. The shelves are a good size but the middle shelf is not adjustable and the tall picture books do not fit in the bookcase.

Assembling this "some assembly required" bookcase took less than an hour and that included plowing through the plethora of packaging materials. Unfortunately, the fasteners that are popular these days for the RTA furniture presume that the average American is an idiot, so there aren't really many screws and bolts, just these crazy little quarter-turn fasteners that hook onto a steel shank.

I long for the days when screws, bolts and nails were used to hold things together.

There's the obligatory piece of cardboard/masonite (can't be more than 1/8" thick) that is fastened to the back of the bookcase and that's the one place that screws are used. The problem is, the screws that come with the bookcase are impossible to use. They're 1/4" long and the head doesn't fit any screwdrivers that I own (and I own a lot of screwdrivers). If I had a jeweler's phillips head screwdriver, that might have worked, but I probably would have gone stark raving mad, first.

After trying one screw, I gave up and went down to the basement to get some real screws. I used 1" long wood screws and predrilled the holes into the back of the bookcase and into the shelving. Those nasty little 1/4" screws that came with the bookcase got tossed. They're never be good for anything, because you can't hold them between your fingers and you can't even get them started using needle nose pliers.

That aside - the bookcase is reasonably sturdy and while the middle shelf is the thinnest of all - the top and bottom shelves can support a little weight. I doubt that the middle shelf will support heavy books and I don't intend to test it.

I've purchased two for my sunporch and heretofore, am pretty pleased. Unfortunately, that $55 price tag is a misnomer, for the shipping costs add $25 to the price. Another downside - this product is manufactured in China. It's hard to believe that this heavy bookcase can be manufactured 12,000 miles away, shipped half-way across the world and still be cheaper than an American-made competitor's product.

Oh well. But hey - how 'bout those t-bills? We get masonite bookcases for storing our history books and they get rapidly deflating American treasury bonds. What a deal.

I ordered this bookcase by mistake, but I was pleasantly surprised when I put it together. Assembly was not difficult. This product is made better than some I have seen. This bookcase would be a great addition to a child's bedroom. It is large enough to hold a collection of favorite books.

4Great bookcaseJul 17, 2006
I ordered this bookcase for our newborn's room - and its perfect! It is just the right height for a lamp on top - so we can read while sitting in our rocking chair. The only thing I didn't like is that the backing is flimsy board - but as the bookshelf is up against the wall it doesn't matter much. So far all the books we've gotten fit on the shelves also.

I would recommend this low horizontal bookcase to anyone.
