The chairs are made of kapur wood, a dense and highly durable hardwood from Southeast Asia (primarily Indonesia and Malaysia). The kapur has a fine-sanded, oil-stained finish in a warm, mahogany brown tone. Rivaling teak for strength and resistance to weather and insects, kapur is ideal for outdoor use. The armchairs' seat and back feature a slatted construction and rust-resistant hardware. The chairs can be stacked up to four high for easy storage. They have an angled back that measures 36 inches tall, and the seat is approximately 17 inches off the floor. Assembly is easy, with all parts and hardware included. Before shipment, your new furniture will receive a generous application of teak oil, which provides protection from ultraviolet light. Left untreated, kapur will weather to a soft, warm shade of gray similar to that of weathered teak. If you prefer to prevent this weathering process, you may apply additional coats of teak oil. How often you'll need to apply teak oil will depend on the intensity of the sun in your environment, but typically, one or two coats per year is sufficient. Teak oil can usually be found at a marine dealer or hardware store, or through an Internet merchant. If you allow your furniture to weather, you may later decide that you want to restore it to its original condition. This is possible using teak-cleaner products, also available at most marine dealers or through Internet merchants. After following the instructions for cleaning, you will want to apply a coat of teak oil to prevent the weathering process. Solid so far but shipping container needs workAug 11, 2008 Overall I'm happy with these chairs. There has been a tiny amount of sap oozing out of a couple pieces of wood, but so far it's minor. At least I hope it's sap and not some odd cancer resin. The packaging could use improvement as there were some minor scratches on these chairs. I know they had a long journey to get here but at this weight of package unless the container is thought through there are going to be some scratches. So far they are holding their finish well but I have applied teak oil once and will do so every six months or so.
Assembly was no problem all the parts were present and the chairs feel solid.
great buyMar 22, 2008 I was about to purchase a similar set from pottery barn for twice the price. I just wasn't comfortable spending that amount of money. I started looking for somethig that would give me the same look for a smaller price. That's when i came across this set. I read all the reviews and was still a little nervous becaue they were so mixed. But I decided to order it anyway. I received the table and chairs in about a week all pieces were intact, simple to assemble- my 16yr old daughter put ours together. It looks great on my deck and i can't wait for the weather to break o i can start using it.
Good buy so far....Feb 19, 2008 I bought these products thinking something suspicious was at play. The chairs were 99 for a set of two, which was better than anywhere else I saw at the time....so I bought them. Much to my suprise, they are great! They were easily put together (if I would have done all 6 at once, it would have come to about 1:30-2:00 hours), and were in almost perfect condition. The only problem I saw was a few of the chairs on various pieces had "rub" marks. I haven't oiled them yet so they might come out. Nothing that a few weeks in the sun won't wash out. Hope the table is just as nice!
Deck chairsNov 12, 2007 These chairs are great for the price. Bought 4 for $120 w/ free shipping. Put some water sealant on them (instead of the recommended teak oil b/c I had an extra can of the sealant) and it worked fine. They haven't kept their deep color as much as they probably would have w/ the teak oil. Seem pretty sturdy and have held up well outside in the sun/weather for past 6 weeks. Would recommend.
Amazing ValueOct 12, 2007 These are really nice chairs. I had seen them before at a dinner party, but it took assembling them to really appreciate how nice they are. The factory joints are mortise and tenon or dowel jointed and they are very well done on my chairs. The wood is clear and appears solid. The hardware included to assemble the chairs at home is strong and easy to use. You do not need any tools beyond the allen wrenches that are included.
Vietnam is a long way from my house, and somewhere between there and here one slat got chipped. I will lightly sand it and put some teak oil on it and call it good. The second chair had some very small warping so that when I assembled it I had to use a little force to align the screw. Instead of slight force, I used excessive leverage and cracked the wood some. It is a small crack, but I will keep an eye on it. If it spreads it should be easy to fix by filling the crack and then sistering a small piece of wood on to relieve some pressure. Someone using moderate sense would not have had this problem. I suspect the people who had problems with these chairs and the matching side chairs may have made similar mistakes to mine.
