You get what you pay for...Feb 17, 2008 While this is an attractive piece with its real wood components and cherry finish, its construction leaves much to be desired. My "finished" product is wobbly, uneven, and in no shape for repeated use in filing and retrieving documents.
My biggest complaint is that the cam locks used to secure adjoining boards to the corresponding cam bolts are made of cheap, thin, utterly impractical,PLASTIC! I've put together a few cabinets of similar type, and they all had METAL cam locks. Granted, they were cheap and thin, but METAL, nonetheless! One tiny bit of extra torque applied while securing to the cam bolt, and "pffft," the cam lock is shattered. One slight movement of the cabinet, and "crack," two cam bolts free themselves from their inferior cam lock counterparts with ridiculous ease.
At this point, I will need to locate additional hardware (corner brackets and longer screws) and professional-quality glue to salvage this weak mess. And even then, the wood pieces are so brittle and split so easily (as I discovered when I tried to secure the top piece to the side frame - after two of the cam locks shattered, of course - at the rear with a long, thin nail).
The Phillips screws provided would not secure the side panels of the drawers but would pull right out of the pre-drilled holes. I had to resort to the old "tooth pick" trick to get them to stay, and even then, the connection was less than solid. I finally just dug up some longer Phillips screws from my tool box, and they did the job fine.
The pieces were well packed and in good shape, and the instructions were clear and easy to follow. All the hardware pieces are packaged in a blister packet, making it very inconvenient to select parts as you go. You'll be better off if you find a tray with compartments and organize the hardware pieces up front.
Better yet, either spend an extra 100 bucks and get a better grade of wood cabinet, or go for a solid metal one that can stand up to a little wear and tear (and the slight trauma of assembly!).
